More About Our Fabrics

More About Our Fabrics

Camira is a well-regarded UK-based textile manufacturer known for its quality and range of contract fabrics. Hemp, Era, and Blazer represent distinct options within their portfolio, each with its own characteristics and design intent.

Understanding Key Fabric Properties (UK Contract Standards):
Before diving into each fabric, it's helpful to understand common metrics used for contract furniture fabrics in the UK:

Martindale Abrasion Resistance: Measured in rubs, this indicates how well the fabric withstands wear and tear. For severe contract use (high traffic office areas), aim for 50,000+ rubs. All three fabrics discussed typically meet or exceed this.

Flammability Standards (e.g., BS 5852 Ignition Source 5 - Crib 5): Essential for commercial furniture in the UK, these tests ensure the fabric meets strict fire safety regulations. Fabrics are tested with different ignition sources (like a simulated burning cigarette - Source 0, or a crib of burning wood - Source 5). Compliance is paramount.

Pilling: A rating (typically 1-5) indicating the fabric's tendency to form small balls of fibre on the surface. A higher number means less pilling (5 is best).

Lightfastness: A rating (typically 1-8) indicating how well the fabric resists fading when exposed to light. Higher is better.

1. Camira Hemp

Composition: A unique blend, typically combining wool and hemp. This marries the natural properties of wool with the strength and sustainability of hemp fibres.

Appearance and Texture: Hemp has a distinctly natural and slightly rustic appearance. The weave often creates a subtle, textured, two-tone or marled effect, giving it depth and visual interest. The handle is often described as dry and tactile, reflecting its natural composition. The colour palette tends towards earthy, muted, and organic tones.

Key Properties:
Durability: Offers good commercial-grade durability (typically 50,000+ Martindale rubs).
Flammability: Meets UK contract flammability standards, benefiting from wool's natural fire resistance and any necessary treatments.
Sustainability: High environmental credentials due to the use of natural, rapidly renewable, and biodegradable fibres (wool and hemp). Hemp cultivation is also known for being low-impact.
Breathability: Natural fibres offer good breathability, contributing to seating comfort.
Pilling & Lightfastness: Generally performs well, suitable for typical office environments.

Philosophy / Why Choose It: The philosophy behind Hemp is deeply rooted in sustainability, natural aesthetics, and a connection to the environment (biophilia). It appeals to organisations prioritising ecological responsibility and seeking to create spaces with an organic, calming, and understated feel. It's chosen to bring the outside in, creating a sense of warmth, authenticity, and well-being. It's less about sharp modernity and more about textured, natural elegance.

2. Camira Era

Composition: 100% Polyester. Era is a synthetic fabric, often incorporating a significant percentage of recycled polyester content.

Appearance and Texture: Era has a fine, subtly textured weave that creates a contemporary, all-over marl or dappled effect. It has a softer, smoother, and more consistent handle than Hemp. It is available in a very extensive and often vibrant colour palette, ranging from bright contemporary shades to more classic neutrals.

Key Properties:
High Durability: Known for exceptional durability, often exceeding 100,000 Martindale rubs, making it suitable for the most demanding, high-traffic areas.
Excellent Flammability: Polyester is inherently fire-retardant, and Era easily meets and often surpasses UK contract flammability standards (Crib 5).
Colour Fastness & Pilling: Excellent resistance to fading and pilling, maintaining its appearance well over time.
Easy Care: Generally easy to clean and maintain.
Recycled Content: Often incorporates recycled materials, adding a sustainability angle through resource efficiency and longevity.

Philosophy / Why Choose It: Era's philosophy is centred on performance, versatility, and modern practicality. It's designed to be a workhorse fabric that looks good, withstands heavy use, offers a wide range of design possibilities through colour, and provides a more accessible price point than some natural fibre options. It's ideal for busy, contemporary offices, breakout spaces, and versatile meeting areas where durability and easy maintenance are top priorities, without compromising on aesthetic choice.

3. Camira Blazer

Composition: 100% Virgin Wool (often worsted wool). This is a premium natural fibre fabric.

Appearance and Texture: Blazer has a classic, refined appearance with a smooth, felted finish. The worsted spinning process results in a clean, even texture. It offers a luxurious, soft handle and a richness of colour. It's available in a sophisticated colour palette, often featuring solid colours or subtle melange effects that highlight the quality of the wool.

Key Properties:
High Durability: Offers excellent commercial-grade durability (typically 50,000+ to 100,000+ Martindale rubs depending on the specific variant).
Exceptional Natural Flammability: Wool is naturally fire-resistant and self-extinguishing, contributing significantly to meeting rigorous UK fire safety standards with minimal or no chemical treatments.
Comfort & Breathability: Wool is naturally breathable, temperature-regulating, and soft to the touch.
Acoustic Properties: Wool fabrics can offer some inherent sound absorption benefits, useful in open-plan or meeting spaces.
Pilling & Lightfastness: Generally performs very well, maintaining a smart appearance.
Sustainability: As a natural, renewable, and biodegradable fibre, wool has strong environmental credentials, representing a more traditional form of textile sustainability.

Philosophy / Why Choose It: Blazer embodies a philosophy of natural luxury, classic elegance, and enduring quality. It's chosen for premium spaces, executive offices, formal boardrooms, and areas where a sophisticated, timeless, and high-quality feel is desired. It speaks to heritage and refinement, offering warmth and comfort alongside robust performance.
